About Soudal
Soudal is a Belgian manufacturer of sealants and adhesives, PU foams and wood glues based in Turnhout. In the trades the name stands above all for three things: construction foams in all fire classes, the hybrid adhesives of the Fix-All series, and wood glues that are clearly classified according to the European stress group. We stock the part of the range that is needed daily on window, door and timber construction sites – from door-frame foam via D4 glue to the liquid membrane at the window connection.
Wood glue: D1 to D4 say how much moisture the joint tolerates
With wood glues, load capacity is not stated in newtons but in a stress group according to EN 204. It describes how much moisture the glued joint withstands in the long term – and that is exactly the question on which a gluing outdoors fails or holds. With us the number is given in the product data of every glue.
In practice that means: indoors and dry, D2 or D3 is enough; outdoors and weathered needs D4. Because PU glues foam up as they cure, the workpiece has to be clamped – otherwise the glue pushes the joint open again. Where a visible glue joint is a nuisance, the transparent Purocol Express is the more inconspicuous choice.

Why door-frame foam can warp the door
PU foam does not only cure, it expands in the process. If the gap between frame and masonry is foamed too full, the foam pushes the frame profiles inwards – the frame develops a bulge, the door leaf rubs, and afterwards this can only be put right by removing it. That is the most common mistake in door installation, and it only shows once the foam is firm.
The second point with foam is the fire class according to DIN 4102-1. A B3 foam is normally flammable and has no business in many connections; a B1 foam is flame-retardant and carries a test certificate. Anyone working in an occupied room also has, with the low-emission Soudafoam PURe, the EC1PLUS classification on their side.

- Setting door frames without warping the frame
- Gluing wood indoors and outdoors to D3 and D4
- Bonding components instead of drilling, also on concrete and metal
- Closing expansion joints elastically, indoors as on the façade
- Grouting sanitary joints with a fungicidal finish
- Fixing insulation boards with adhesive foam instead of mortaring them
- Making window connections airtight and driving-rain-proof with liquid membrane
- Closing cracks on the roof immediately, even in rain
- Bonding glass aquariums and seawater tanks
- Repairing cracks in plaster with a grainy finish and painting over
- Cleaning foam guns and tools of residues
Soudal product families
Good to know
- Based in Turnhout, Belgium. Soudal N.V. is a family business and describes itself as an independent European producer of sealants and adhesives and PU foams for professionals and DIY enthusiasts.
- Three fire classes in foam. B1 flame-retardant, B2 normally flammable, B3 without proof – each according to DIN 4102-1. With us the class is given in the product data of every can.
- Fix All is a series, not a single product. Flexi stays soft and absorbs movement, High Tack grips immediately and holds without propping, Turbo is designed for structural connections. The Shore hardness in the product data shows the difference.
- Gun or straw. Gun foam can be dosed, interrupted and restarted; straw foam is intended for a single operation. The combination valves of some cans take both.

Frequently asked questions about Soudal
What does D3 or D4 mean for wood glue?
They are the stress groups according to EN 204 and describe the moisture load that the glued joint tolerates in the long term. D1 is the dry interior, D2 allows rare brief moisture, D3 frequent brief exposure to water, D4 frequent long exposure – that is, the weathered exterior. For garden furniture, front doors and window frames outdoors the way leads to D4, at Soudal to the PU glues Pro 40P and Purocol Express.
Why does my PU glue foam up?
Because it reacts with the moisture from the wood and the air. This produces gas, the volume increases and gaps are bridged – an advantage with components that do not fit perfectly, but a problem if the workpiece is not clamped: the glue pushes the joint open. That is why with PU glue always press, and chisel off the excess only after curing, not smear it in the soft state.
How much foam belongs in the door frame joint?
Considerably less than the gap holds. The foam expands as it cures and otherwise pushes the frame inwards. Usual is filling section by section in spots, with the frame braced apart, which is only released after complete curing. Anyone who wants to be finished faster takes a 2K door-frame foam, which can be cut after a few minutes.
Which silicone may go into the aquarium?
Only a designated aquarium silicone. Standard sanitary silicones are fitted with a fungicide, and these additives do not belong in the tank. According to the manufacturer, Silirub AQ is harmless to fish after curing and also seawater-resistant. Complete curing before filling is important – the time for this depends on joint thickness and room climate and is given in the data sheet.
