About Kip

Kip is an adhesive tape manufacturer from Bocholt in the western Münsterland that has been developing and producing tapes for the trades for over fifty years. In a painting business the name stands for masking, protective and cloth tapes that can be removed cleanly again – each tape carries a three-digit number that stands for a specific combination of backing, adhesive and adhesion strength. We stock the part of the range that comes off the roll every day when painting, varnishing and plastering: fine crepe, PVC and PE protective tapes, maskers and cloth tapes.

The adhesion strength must match the substrate, not the task

Two mistakes are made when masking, and both have the same cause: the tape is wrongly chosen for the substrate. If it is too weak, the paint runs underneath and the edge frays. If it is too strong, the wallpaper, the fresh paint or the coating comes off with it when peeled. Adhesion strength is therefore not a quality feature but a property that has to match the material underneath.

Adhesion strength of adhesive tapes and the matching substrate Adhesion strength → Washi Wallpaper, fresh paint moderate Fine crepe Wall, interior edges medium PE / PVC Frames, windows, outdoors strong Cloth Concrete, plaster, stone very strong too weak: paint creeps under the edge too strong: the substrate comes off with it
The roll depends on what it sticks to. On woodchip wallpaper, freshly painted surfaces and sensitive wallpapers, a tape with restrained adhesion belongs, such as the washi wallpaper tape 309; for the sharp paint line indoors, the fine crepe 3804. On window and door frames, where plaster, weather and chemicals act, the PVC and PE protective tapes are at home, and on rough concrete only a cloth tape such as the concrete tape 358 will hold.

Selection guide: which Kip tape for which substrate?

The overview arranges the Kip range we stock by substrate and task. The details in the last column come from the product data of the respective article.

Why the paint line frays anyway

Even the right tape does not guarantee a sharp edge. Paint creeps into the smallest gap between tape and substrate – and this gap almost always arises in the same place: at the tape edge if it was not pressed down, or on a textured substrate such as woodchip wallpaper, where the tape only rests on the raised parts.

Masked edge: paint creeping under and sealed Masked only Tape Paint creeps into the texture blurred, jagged edge Edge sealed beforehand Tape Base colour closes the gap sharp edge, no reworking Masked edge: paint creeping under and sealed — Section 1 of 2 Masked only Tape Paint creeps into the texture blurred, jagged edge Edge sealed beforehand Tape Base colour closes the gap sharp edge, no reworking Masked edge: paint creeping under and sealed — Section 2 of 2 Masked only Tape Paint creeps into the texture blurred, jagged edge Edge sealed beforehand Tape Base colour closes the gap sharp edge, no reworking
The trick: paint with the old colour first. After masking, the tape edge is painted over thinly with the colour of the substrate. What then creeps underneath is the old paint and goes unnoticed – at the same time it closes the gap. Only then does the new paint go on. Second point: the tape is always pressed along the edge with the thumb or a spatula, not just laid on. And it is peeled off while the paint has not yet dried through completely – at a shallow angle, away from the paint.

Good to know

  • In Bocholt for over fifty years. Kip GmbH develops and produces adhesive tapes there for the trades, industry and retail and, by its own account, employs around 100 people.
  • Over 650 products in 26 countries. Manufacturer's information, as of September 2026.
  • Part of the Shurtape group. Since the year 2000, Kip has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Shurtape Technologies LLC, an internationally active adhesive tape manufacturer.
  • The number is the actual product identifier. 309, 315, 319, 3804 – behind each stands a fixed combination of backing, adhesive and adhesion strength. Anyone who knows a number gets the same tape when reordering, regardless of width and roll length.
  • Maskers save an operation. With them the adhesive tape is already attached to the film or the paper. The 2.60 m wide sheet covers a wall surface in one pass.

Frequently asked questions about Kip

How do I get a really sharp paint line?

Three steps decide. First: press the tape down along the edge with the thumb or a spatula, do not just lay it on. Second: paint the tape edge thinly with the colour of the substrate – what creeps underneath is then the old paint and closes the gap at the same time. Third: peel the tape off before the paint has dried through completely, at a shallow angle and away from the fresh paint. On woodchip wallpaper and rough plaster some residual blurring remains anyway, because the tape only rests on the raised parts there.

How long may a tape stay stuck?

Every tape has a dwell time after which it can no longer be removed without residue – sun and heat shorten it considerably. The binding figure is given in the technical data sheet of the respective roll. For work outdoors the UV-resistant types are intended, such as the cloth masker 333 or the armoured tape 3829. As a rule of thumb: no longer than necessary, and never left beyond a spell of fine weather.

What is the difference between PVC and PE protective tape?

Both protect frame profiles but differ in the backing. PVC is tougher and more abrasion-resistant and withstands mechanical stress better – the 3818, for example, is expressly designed for it. PE is softer, repels water and adheres more gently, which spares sensitive surfaces; the 319 keeps fresh plaster off the frame. Both are resistant to oil and petrol.

What do I need a masker for?

A masker is adhesive tape and covering material on one roll: the tape is already attached to the edge of the film or paper. When masking large areas this saves a whole operation – the 232 with a width of 2.60 m covers a wall in one pass, the 332 with 550 mm is cut to window sill and frame. Where paint mist is to be caught rather than repelled, the paper version is the better choice.
