About Spray Color

Spray Color is a manufacturer of spray paints and marking paints from Merzenich near Düren; in the trade the range runs under the brand name Sparvar. We stock the part of the range needed on the building site and in the workshop: zinc and rust protection primer from the can, matt topcoat, hammer-finish effect paint, the touch-up pen for repairs and the chalk spray for markings on the ground.

On metal the first layer decides, not the last

A topcoat colours metal and protects it from moisture – as long as the layer is closed. A stone chip, a scratch, a cut edge is enough, and the water stands directly on the steel. That is why corrosion protection does not work via the topcoat but via the primer. With a zinc-rich primer this is not passive protection but active: zinc is less noble than iron and is consumed first at the defect – the iron beneath is spared as long as zinc is present.

Orange is the zinc primer, dark the topcoat above it; both shades of grey are steel and rust. Zinc sacrifices itself so that the steel remains. According to the product data, Sparvar zinc spray contains around 85 per cent zinc in the dried film; the flake-shaped pigment overlaps like scales and closes the surface. That makes it the choice for repairs on galvanised components and for cut edges that stand bare after cutting to length. Where it is only about adhesion and rust prevention, the rust protection primer is sufficient, which according to the product data also works on wood, masonry and most plastics.

Spraying distance: the most common mistake with the can

A paint spray emits a cone that produces a spot on the surface. If the can is too close, too much material arrives in a short time – the paint runs. If it is too far away, the droplets already dry in the air and settle as a rough, matt grain that no longer flows out. You only see either once the surface is finished.

Work in strokes, not in spots. The can is guided evenly parallel to the surface, the movement starts before the workpiece and ends beyond it – anyone who stops at the edge and presses again there gets too much material at exactly that spot. Each stroke overlaps the previous one by half. And the rule is: better two thin passes than one to cover. The binding spraying distance and the intermediate drying time are given on the print of the respective can; according to the product data, Sparvar paint spray matt is to be processed between +10 °C and +25 °C.

Good to know

  • Based in Merzenich near Düren. Spray Color GmbH is located at Merzenicher Weg 4 in 52399 Merzenich; the range runs in the trade under the brand name Sparvar.
  • Lead- and cadmium-free. According to the product data, the touch-up pen and zinc spray are formulated lead- and cadmium-free and low in aromatics – a point that counts when working in enclosed rooms.
  • Marking chalk spray is not paint. The line is meant to disappear again: according to the product data it dissolves with the weather without having to be removed. It is therefore expressly not intended for permanent markings.
  • The overhead nozzle saves your back. With the marking chalk spray the nozzle is positioned so that the can is held upside down – lines on the ground are made while walking instead of bending.
  • Cans need temperature. Below about ten degrees the spray pressure becomes too low and the paint no longer atomises cleanly. In winter the can therefore belongs in the warm beforehand, not in the van.

Frequently asked questions about Sparvar

Zinc spray or rust protection primer?

Zinc spray belongs on galvanised components and bare cut edges: the high zinc content protects the steel even where the layer is damaged later. The rust protection primer is the all-rounder beneath – it creates adhesion for the topcoat and, according to the product data, also works on wood, masonry and most plastics. Anyone treating a shortened fence panel or a cut-off post cap reaches for zinc.

Why does my paint run?

Usually because the can was held too close to the surface or stayed too long in one place. A paint spray needs movement: evenly parallel to the surface, with a run-up before the workpiece and a run-out beyond it, and each stroke overlapped by half. Two thin passes with intermediate drying produce a better surface than one thick one. The spraying distance and the waiting time are given on the can's print.

Can I paint over a zinc primer?

According to the product data, Sparvar zinc spray can be painted over with itself at any time. Whether and after what waiting time another topcoat may go over it depends on the topcoat and is stated in its data sheet – some systems react sensitively to zinc-rich substrates. In case of doubt, a test on an offcut helps: if the topcoat wrinkles after a few days or stays soft, it is not compatible.

How long does a marking chalk spray marking last?

As long as the weather allows – it is expressly made to dissolve again so that nothing has to be removed. According to the product data, it holds on grass and soil as well as on firm ground. It is not suitable for permanent markings; that needs a marking paint that cures. The period depends strongly on rain and sun and therefore cannot be stated in days.
