About Sika
Sika is a Swiss specialty chemicals group for bonding, sealing, damping, reinforcing and protecting components. In the trades the name stands above all for two things: elastic adhesives and sealants that absorb component movement instead of tearing, and systems for the window connection. We stock the part of the range that is needed daily on the building site – from the Sikaflex cartridge to the EPDM connection film.
The window connection: tighter on the inside than on the outside
The most common building damage at the window does not arise from rain from outside but from moisture from inside. Warm room air penetrates into the connection joint, cools there and precipitates as water. That is why the rule applies that every RAL-compliant installation must follow: tighter on the inside than on the outside. The inner layer keeps the room air out of the joint, the outer one keeps rain out but lets vapour escape to the outside.
For the connection we stock three films that differ in the adhesive side: Active SB is self-adhesive on one side and needs no additional adhesive at the frame. Active FSB-T sticks on both sides – on the back over the full surface, on the front with a 20 mm strip –, so that an extra adhesive is not needed. Outdoor and Universal are EPDM rubber without an adhesive layer; they are applied with Sikabond-444 Membrane Fix, which allows the film to be shifted for up to thirty minutes.
Selection guide: which Sika adhesive or sealant?
The decision almost always comes down to two questions: does the connection have to absorb movement, and will it be painted over? Elastic polyurethanes absorb movement, acrylic can be painted over, and a structural adhesive bears load. The following table summarises what we stock.
| Product | Base | Purpose | Special feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sikaflex 11 FC Purform | Polyurethane, 1K | Joints and bonds that move | Non-sag paste, does not run out of the vertical joint |
| Sikacryl Professional | Polyacrylate, water-based | Connection joints indoors, paintable | Low odour, adheres without pretreatment · DIN 52452-4 |
| SikaBond T2 | Polyurethane | Bonding components instead of screwing | Elastic, dampens sound and vibration |
| SikaFast 555 L05 | Polyacrylate, 2K | structural, load-bearing connections | Stays tough on impact instead of splintering |
| SikaBond-52 | elastic, solvent-free | Parquet and boards over the full surface | Approved by the building authorities, very low emissions |
| SikaBond TF Plus R | Polyurethane | Bonding films and sheets | EMICODE EC1 Plus · one-sided, without contact pressure |
| Sikabond-444 Membrane Fix | Hybrid polymer | Applying connection films | Adjustable for 30 minutes · does not attack rigid foam |
| Sikaflex Tank N | Polyurethane | Collecting trays, LAU installations | Approved by the building authorities, media-resistant |
| Sikafloor-400 N | Polyurethane | Balcony, access gallery | Bridges cracks and seals at the same time |
| Sika Remover 208 | solvent-based | loosening fresh residues from tools | Does not drip, can be applied in a controlled way |
The joint has to be allowed to work
An elastic sealant can only stretch what is not stuck down. If it sticks on three sides – both flanks and the joint base –, it tears at the first movement at the weakest point. That is why every movement joint needs a backing cord: it limits the depth and prevents adhesion at the base.
What tradespeople use Sika for
- Closing expansion joints on façade, balcony and terrace elastically
- Bonding window connections airtight inside and rain-tight outside
- Bonding parquet and boards elastically over the full surface
- Bonding vapour barriers and waterproofing films to the building body
- Coating balcony and access gallery floors in a crack-bridging way
- Bonding metal, glass and plastic structurally instead of screwing
- Sealing collecting trays and LAU installations media-resistantly
- Closing connection joints indoors so they can be painted over
- Removing fresh adhesive and sealant residues from tools
Sika product families
Good to know
- Since 1910. Kaspar Winkler laid the foundation for today's company in Zurich. The first product was a waterproofing mortar with which the Gotthard tunnel was made dry – hence the name Sika.
- Group headquarters in Baar, Switzerland. In 2024 over 34,000 people worked for Sika, 1,840 of them in research and development.
- German roots in Stuttgart. The German company goes back to Lechler Chemie, which produced in Stuttgart from 1925. Sika Deutschland is based there to this day.
- Purform. The newer polyurethanes carry this addition. Sikaflex 11 FC Purform cures through atmospheric moisture and stays non-sag in the process – it does not run out of the vertical joint.
- Systems instead of individual products. From the window rebate via the floor build-up to the balcony coating, adhesion and compatibility come from a single source. Anyone who takes film, adhesive and sealant from the same series saves themselves the question of whether they are compatible.
Frequently asked questions about Sika
Sikaflex or Sikacryl – which do I use when?
Sikaflex is an elastic polyurethane and absorbs movement: expansion joints, connections outdoors, bonds that move. Sikacryl is a water-based acrylic, can be painted over and belongs indoors, where hardly any movement occurs – for example at the connection between wall and frame. A painted-over movement joint cracks in the paint, even if the sealant beneath holds.
Which SikaMembran film belongs on the inside, which on the outside?
On the inside the airtight layer: SikaMembran Active SB, self-adhesive on one side and can be plastered. On the outside the rainproof but vapour-permeable layer: SikaMembran Outdoor made of EPDM. The principle “tighter inside than outside” must not be swapped – otherwise moisture migrates into the joint instead of out of it.
Does Sikaflex 11 FC need a primer?
On many common substrates it adheres without a primer coat. For strongly absorbent, very smooth or permanently damp substrates, as well as for bonds under water load, the product data sheet specifies a pretreatment. The data sheets are available with us at every article – the manufacturer's binding status is given there.
Why does a backing cord belong in the joint?
So that the sealant adheres only to both flanks and not to the joint base. With adhesion on three sides it cannot distribute the movement across its width and tears at the weakest point. The cord is chosen about a quarter wider than the joint so that it jams by itself.
