About Schuller Eh'klar
Schuller Eh'klar is an Austrian family business from St. Florian near Linz that distributes tools and accessories for painters, varnishers and drywallers through the specialist trade. The range is organised into fixed series – MAESTRO and MERCATO for brushes, SILVERLINE and TOPLINE for rollers, KAI and STAN for filling knives and trowels –, so that quality and price within a series stay the same. We stock the part of the range that is used up daily in a painting business: brushes, paint rollers, filling knives, blades, covering material and protective equipment.
The pile height decides the result
With a paint roller the talk is mostly about the cover material, but what is decided is the pile height – the length of the fibre velvet. It determines how much paint the roller takes up and how deep it gets into a texture. A short pile gives a smooth, streak-free paint surface, a long pile fills plaster texture and covers large wall surfaces quickly.
The second point is solvent resistance. Emulsion paint is water-based and does not attack the cover; synthetic-resin paint, stain and wood preservative, by contrast, dissolve adhesives and some fibres. With Schuller the rollers designed for this carry the note expressly – for example the Goldline radiator roller, whose polyamide fibre also withstands paint and stain.

Natural bristle or synthetic bristle – the binder decides
China bristle is natural hair. It has a split tip that takes up paint cleanly and releases it evenly again – which is why it is at home in the gloss-paint brush. In water, however, it swells, loses tension and leaves streaks. Synthetic bristles made of polyester, polyamide or nylon do not absorb water and keep their shape; nylon additionally withstands acids and alkalis, which makes stripping work possible in the first place.

Schuller product families
Good to know
- Based in St. Florian, Upper Austria. From there Schuller Eh'klar GmbH supplies numerous European countries; the website appears in seventeen languages.
- Family-run. The company itself describes its strategy with the term “50 years of Management by Family” and distributes exclusively through the specialist trade, not directly to end customers.
- Series instead of individual articles. MAESTRO, MADURO and MERCATO stand for different quality grades in brushes, SILVERLINE, TOPLINE and GOLDLINE in rollers, KAI and STAN in filling knives and trowels. Anyone who knows a series can transfer the quality without reading every data sheet.
- The name. “Eh'klar” is Austrian colloquial speech for “of course” – a play on words that has served as a trademark for decades.
- Two system sizes for the frames. Paint rollers come in the 6 mm and the 8 mm system. Anyone who reorders roller and frame separately has to pay attention to the same number, otherwise the sleeve does not fit.

Frequently asked questions about Schuller
Which pile height do I need for my wall?
For smooth interior walls and ceilings with emulsion paint, 18 mm is the usual choice – the Silverline Texalon or the Top-Line made of polyamide take up enough paint to make quick progress. For paint on a smooth surface, 4 mm velour belongs in the hand, for radiators and stain 12 mm. The rule of thumb: the coarser the substrate, the longer the pile – the smoother the desired surface, the shorter.
China bristle or synthetic bristle?
China bristle is natural hair and belongs with solvent-based paints, stains and oils. In water-based paint it swells and loses tension, which is why you reach for synthetic bristle made of polyester or polyamide there. Many Schuller brushes are mixed bristle and can be used for both. For paint strippers the acid-resistant nylon bristle is the only right choice – any other bristle dissolves.
Does every roller fit every frame?
No. Paint rollers come in the 6 mm and the 8 mm system, named after the diameter of the frame wire. With us the dimension is given in the product data of the frame, for example for the push-fit frame in the 8 mm system. Anyone who reorders frame and roller separately should compare the number. For extensions there are matching painter's poles with a threaded connection.
How do I clean brushes and rollers properly?
Water-based paints can be washed out with warm water and a little soap as long as they are fresh; solvent-based paints need the thinner that suits the product. The timing is decisive: dried-on paint in the bristle base can no longer be got out, and a roller with a hardened core no longer delivers an even surface. For short breaks it helps to wrap the tool airtight instead of washing it out.
