About Gori
Gori is a wood protection brand distributed in Germany by PPG Coatings Deutschland GmbH in Bochum. In the trade the name stands for a tidy range with three levels: the thin-film stain 33 Sensitiv, the medium-film stain 88 Compact in gel form and the opaque weather-protection paint 99 – plus the Multi-Primer 23 as a bonding primer for difficult substrates. We stock this series in the pack sizes needed on the building site, from 0.75 to 5 litres.
Thin, medium or opaque – the film thickness determines the maintenance
Wood preservatives differ less in the active ingredient than in the film thickness they form on the wood. And that decides two things: how much of the grain is still visible – and how the coating behaves when it reaches the end of its life after years. A thin film weathers off evenly and is simply painted over; a thick film cracks and flakes and has to be stripped.
The second aid to decision-making is the component itself. A non-dimensionally stable component such as a fence or cladding may swell and shrink – the thin, open film belongs there. A dimensionally stable component such as a window or front door has to keep its dimensions, therefore tolerates the thicker, closed film and also needs it, because more water has to be kept out there.
Selection guide: which Gori product for which wood?
The overview arranges the Gori range we stock by build-up level. The details in the last column come from the product data of the respective article.

Why a stain weathers off and a lacquer flakes
A thin, open-pored coating lets moisture through in both directions. Over the years it loses material at the surface – first matt, then lighter, finally free in places. That looks like wear but is the easier case: after cleaning and sanding it can be painted over directly. A closed film keeps water out as long as it is undamaged. If it develops a crack, water gets underneath and can no longer get out – and then the film lifts off over a large area.

Gori product families
Good to know
- Distribution via PPG in Bochum. PPG Coatings Deutschland GmbH, Feldstr. 5A, 44867 Bochum, is responsible for Gori in Germany.
- The number is the product. 23, 33, 88, 99 – the number designates the product and stays the same across all pack sizes and shades. Anyone reordering only needs the number and the shade.
- DIN EN 71. According to the product data, Gori 23 and Gori 33 carry this standard for the safety of toys – which is why they are approved for play equipment, nurseries and schools.
- EN 927 is the European series of standards for coating materials on exterior wood. Gori 88 Compact is tested as an exterior stain accordingly.
- Gel instead of liquid. The Compact series is formulated gel-like. On vertical surfaces – shutters, fence slats, railings – this means fewer runs and less rework.

Frequently asked questions about Gori
Thin film or medium film – which do I choose?
What matters is whether the component has to keep its dimensions. Fences, cladding, carports and garden timber may swell and shrink – a thin-film stain such as Gori 33 Sensitiv belongs there. Shutters, doors and railings should keep their shape and keep more water out; the medium-film Gori 88 Compact is intended for that. Where the grain is to disappear completely, the opaque Gori 99 is used.
Do I have to prime before the stain?
On clean, sound softwood usually not. A primer coat becomes necessary if wood constituents can bleed through – with oak, larch and some tropical woods –, if metallic components are coated as well, or if the substrate does not accept paint at all. According to the product data, the Multi-Primer 23 is specified for zinc, aluminium, rigid PVC, ferrous metal and wood and blocks wood constituents.
How often do I have to repaint?
That depends far more on the weather side, pitch and shade than on the product: a weathered south façade needs a coat considerably more often than a sheltered north side, and light shades withstand UV light less well than dark ones. The rule with thin-film stains is to repaint while there is still coating left – then cleaning, sanding and one coat are enough. The binding intervals are given in the technical data sheet of the respective product.
Can I paint solvent-based over water-based?
As a general rule: the new coating must suit the old one, and compatibility is stated in the data sheet. We stock Gori 33 both water-based and solvent-based – the base is given in the product data of the respective pack. In case of doubt, a test area in an inconspicuous spot helps: if the new coating blisters there after a few days or stays tacky, it is not compatible with the old coating.
