About Pattex
Pattex is Henkel's adhesive brand for assembly, repair and instant bonds. In the trades and on the building site the name stands above all for “bonding instead of drilling” – assembly adhesives and double-sided tapes that hold light components without dowels and without a hole in the wall – and also for superglue, all-purpose adhesive and the 2K repair putty. We stock the small containers in the toolbox and on the building site that make the difference between “has to be drilled again” and “done”.
Bonding instead of drilling works – but only in one direction
A bonded surface tolerates tension parallel to the surface very well and perpendicular to it considerably less well. The difference is called shear load versus peel load, and it decides whether a bonded strip holds for years or falls off after two weeks. With peel load the whole load acts on a narrow edge of the bonded surface – as when peeling off a plaster.
The second point is the substrate itself. A bond is only ever as strong as the layer it sits on: on chalking paint, loose plaster or a dusty surface the adhesive holds the contamination, not the wall. That is why the same applies before any assembly bonding as before any coat of paint – clean, degrease, remove loose layers.
Selection guide: which Pattex for which connection?
The overview arranges the Pattex range we stock by task. The details in the last column come from the product data of the respective article.
| Product | Base | Purpose | Special feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bonding instead of drilling tape | Acrylate adhesive | mounting light components without dowels | UV- and temperature-resistant, also outdoors · 19 mm × 1.5 m |
| Assembly adhesive Power | Polyacrylate, water-based | Joining concrete, wood and polystyrene | Does not attack polystyrene · tube without cartridge gun |
| Power adhesive, solvent-free | water-based | Wood, metal, leather, rubber and stone | High initial tack · dries transparent |
| Repair all-purpose adhesive | Hybrid polymer | Repairs in wet rooms and outdoors | Waterproof · stays flexible when the component moves |
| Repair Express Power putty | Epoxy resin, 2K | Filling and shaping defects | Can be sanded and painted over · 6 portions individually packed |
| Superglue Original | Cyanoacrylate | precisely fitting break points | Creeps into the finest cracks · 3 g tube |

Why superglue does not hold in a wide joint
Cyanoacrylate – the substance in superglue – cures through atmospheric moisture and needs a very thin layer for it. In a wide joint the centre stays soft, and what does cure is hard and brittle. That is why the rule applies: superglue requires a precisely fitting break point. Where a gap remains, the way leads to a gap-filling adhesive or to the 2K putty.
What tradespeople use Pattex for
- Fixing strips, profiles and holders without a drill hole
- Mounting mirrors, signs and light components
- Bonding polystyrene and insulation boards without dissolving them
- Joining broken-off parts that fit precisely immediately
- Filling in chipped-out areas and defects and finishing them
- Carrying out repairs in the bathroom and outdoors waterproof
- Joining wood, metal, leather and rubber indoors
- Bonding overhead and on vertical surfaces
- Applying adhesive in a controlled way with the toothed spreader
- Setting temporary solutions that are later to come off again

Good to know
- Pattex belongs to Henkel. The Düsseldorf group, by its own account, celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2026; its adhesive brands also include Ponal, Tangit and Teroson.
- Solvent-free is the new standard. The classic contact adhesive smelled of solvent; today's water-based variants such as the power adhesive are low in odour and do not attack polystyrene – a point at which solvent-based adhesives would dissolve the insulation board.
- Individually packed portions. The 2K putty comes in six sachets of five grams each. That sounds like packaging but has a reason: opened epoxy ages, individually packed portions do not.
- Cyanoacrylate and skin. Superglue bonds fingers just as reliably as workpieces. The safety information on the packaging is no mere formality here.
- Double-sided tape needs contact pressure. Full adhesion builds up only over hours – brief pressing is not enough, and the final load should only come after that.

Frequently asked questions about Pattex
How much does “bonding instead of drilling” really hold?
The manufacturer's figure for the assembly tape is a good hundredweight. This figure applies to a clean, sound substrate and a load along the bonded surface. If the load hangs on an edge, that is, in peel, only a fraction of it remains. For components where a failure could hit someone – wall cabinets, heavy shelves, anything overhead –, mechanical fixing remains the right solution.
Why does my superglue not hold?
Usually the joint is too wide. Cyanoacrylate cures through atmospheric moisture and needs a very thin layer; in a visible gap the core stays soft. The second common cause is the material: polyethylene, polypropylene and Teflon hardly accept adhesives. And thirdly, cyanoacrylate is hard and brittle – on parts that move or vibrate, the bond breaks. An elastic adhesive belongs there.
Which adhesive does not attack polystyrene?
Water-based and solvent-free products. Solvent-based adhesives dissolve polystyrene – the board visibly shrinks at the bonding point. The Assembly adhesive Power is expressly approved for polystyrene and bonds it to concrete and wood. In case of doubt, a test on an offcut helps before the whole board is applied.
Can I paint over the epoxy putty?
Yes. The Repair Express Power putty can be sanded and painted over after curing and can thus be worked into a repaired surface. According to the product data it can bear mechanical load after one day. Processing is important: both components have to be kneaded through completely until the colour is even – if streaks remain, the spot does not cure through.
