Description
OTTO Primer 1227 is a plastics primer based on a solvent-based adhesion promoter combination. It improves the adhesion of OTTO sealants and adhesives on many plastics and, according to the data sheet, is toluene-free. The 1000 ml aluminium bottle is the pack for processors with a larger volume of joints.

Limits & notes
The primer must be applied thinly and evenly; excess primer forms a film that impairs adhesion. According to the safety data sheet it contains isocyanates and may cause allergic skin reactions. For other OTTO product groups, substrates or coatings, OTTO recommends preliminary tests. Do not apply the primer beyond the joint edges and bonding surfaces, otherwise soiling or visual changes are possible.

Application & tips
Free the bonding surfaces of release agents, grease, oil, dust, water and old adhesives or sealants; clean non-porous substrates with OTTO Cleaner T and a clean, lint-free cloth, clean porous substrates of loose particles mechanically, for example with a steel brush or grinding disc. Roughen plastic surfaces before priming if necessary. Apply the primer thinly and evenly to the joint flanks with a suitable brush and allow to flash off for at least 30 minutes; higher temperatures shorten and lower temperatures lengthen the flash-off time. Solvent-containing, flammable: only with good ventilation, away from ignition sources; wear safety goggles and solvent-resistant gloves, according to the safety data sheet made of butyl rubber with a thickness of more than 0.4 mm. Avoid skin contact, as the primer contains isocyanates. Because of the many influences on site, a trial application is always necessary. The use-by date is on the container, storage stability is 12 months at 23 °C.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between 1227 and 1217?
Both improve adhesion on plastics. According to the data sheet 1227 is toluene-free, 1217 contains toluene.
How long does the primer have to flash off?
At least 30 minutes at 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity, at most 3 hours.
Do I have to sand the plastic?
Not necessarily. OTTO recommends roughening the surface if required, to improve adhesion further.
