Description
Sika Primer-3 N is a one-component solvent-based reactive primer for the adhesion pre-treatment of porous and metallic joint flanks before sealing. Approved for Sikaflex, SikaBond, SikaHyflex and Sikasil. Available as a 250 ml and a 1 l tin.
Benefits at a glance
- One primer for two types of substrate: suitable for porous, absorbent building materials as well as for smooth metal surfaces.
- Damp site conditions: adheres to matt-damp concrete too, provided there is no condensation standing on the surface.
- Carry on quickly: flash-off time at least 30 minutes above 15 °C; apply the sealant within 8 hours at the latest.
- High coverage: around 250 linear metres of joint (20 × 15 mm) per litre on absorbent flanks, around 400 linear metres on metal.
- Discreet: transparent.
Areas of application
- Joints on porous, absorbent substrates such as concrete, dry or matt-damp
- Metal joint flanks
- Pre-treatment before Sikaflex and SikaHyflex sealants
- Pre-treatment before Sikasil silicones and SikaBond adhesives
Limits & notes
A primer does not replace cleaning of the bonding surfaces and does not increase the strength of a weak substrate; it improves the durability of the seal. Sika Primer-3 N reacts with atmospheric moisture: close the tin immediately after every use and use up opened containers within about 1–2 months. Do not dilute; material that has gelled or become viscous should no longer be used.
Hazard statements: Danger. H225 Highly flammable liquid and vapour. H319 Causes serious eye irritation. H336 May cause drowsiness or dizziness. H412 Harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects. EUH066 Repeated exposure may cause skin dryness or cracking. EUH208 Contains dibutyltin dilaurate. May produce an allergic reaction. Safety data sheet available from the manufacturer.
Application & tips
The joint flanks must be sound, firm, clean and dry, free from oil, grease, dust, cement slurry and coatings. Brush the primer on evenly in one application with a clean brush; on smooth surfaces a solvent-resistant roller or melamine sponge can also be used. Highly absorbent substrates may need a second application. Air and substrate temperature +5 to +40 °C, substrate at least 3 K above the dew point. Solvent-based and flammable: use only with good ventilation, away from sources of ignition; wear safety goggles and solvent-resistant gloves (nitrile). Clean tools immediately with Sika Remover-208; cured primer can be removed mechanically only. Unopened, it can be stored dry at +5 to +25 °C out of direct sunlight for 9 months from manufacture.
Frequently asked questions
How long must the primer flash off?
At least 30 minutes above 15 °C, longer at lower temperatures. The sealant must be applied within 8 hours.
How much primer do I need?
One litre covers approx. 5 m² of absorbent surface or approx. 250 m of joint at 20 × 15 mm; on metal approx. 8 m² or 400 m of joint.
Can I use the primer on damp concrete?
Yes, on matt-damp concrete. Standing water or condensation on the surface must be removed beforehand.
Does the primer also work with sealants from other manufacturers?
Sika approves it for SikaBond, Sikaflex, SikaHyflex and Sikasil. For third-party products, the primer recommendation of the respective sealant manufacturer applies.
