About tesa
tesa is an adhesive tape manufacturer based in Norderstedt near Hamburg, whose name in everyday speech has long stood for the thing itself. In a painting business, however, it is not about the office tesa but about the professional rolls with a four-digit number: 4306, 4319 and 4348 for masking tape, 4848 for surface protection film. We stock exactly these rolls – plus the PRO Duct Tape as a cloth tape for everything that has to hold until it is repaired permanently.
Lightly or heavily creped – that is the whole difference
Masking tape is paper that is compressed during manufacture; this fine corrugation is called creping and determines two properties at once. A lightly creped tape has a smooth, calm edge and therefore pulls the sharpest paint line – but it can hardly be stretched. A heavily creped tape has stretch reserve in the paper and follows curves and arched surfaces, but the edge becomes slightly less even.
The third in the group is tesakrepp 4348: the standard tape for clean paint lines indoors, with a natural rubber adhesive that, according to the product data, later comes off without force and without adhesive residue. All three are specified up to 60 °C and designated for indoor use.
Selection guide: which tesa tape for which job?
The overview arranges the tesa range we stock by task. The details in the last column come from the product data of the respective article.

| tesakrepp 4348 | Special paper, natural rubber | Standard masking indoors | Comes off without force and without adhesive residue · up to 60 °C |

The dwell time is a product property, not a recommendation
Every adhesive tape can only be removed without residue for a limited time. Over time the adhesive flows into the surface structure of the substrate; heat and UV light accelerate this considerably. That is why protective films have a dwell time in the product data – for the surface protection film 4848 this is up to four weeks.

Good to know
- Based in Norderstedt. tesa SE has its headquarters at Hugo-Kirchberg-Straße 1 in 22848 Norderstedt near Hamburg.
- The four-digit number is the professional identifier. 4306, 4319, 4348, 4848 – it designates a specific tape with a fixed combination of backing, adhesive and properties. When reordering it is the only detail that matters; width and length are variants of it.
- Natural rubber sticks immediately. The masking tapes work with a natural rubber adhesive: high initial tack, immediately loadable, but more sensitive to heat and UV than acrylic. That is why they are designated for indoor use.
- Acrylic lasts longer. The surface protection film 4848 works with an acrylic adhesive and, according to the product data, is UV-resistant and can be used up to 60 °C – the reason why it may also be left outdoors.
- Duct tape is not a sealant. It seals and fixes provisionally but does not replace a permanent connection. Where it is to remain permanently sealed, a sealant or a system-tested tape belongs.

Frequently asked questions about tesa
Which tesakrepp pulls the sharpest line?
tesakrepp 4306 Premium. It is lightly creped, so it has a calm tape edge and, according to the product data, is intended for straight edges and gentle curves. For arches and arched surfaces it is the wrong choice – there it wrinkles, and paint runs into every wrinkle. For those there is tesakrepp 4319 with high stretch reserve.
When do I peel off the tape?
While the paint has not yet dried through completely – then the paint film tears off cleanly at the tape edge instead of coming along. Peel at a shallow angle and away from the fresh paint. With several coats, peel after the last one rather than re-masking in between: every additional tape edge in the same place is an additional source of error.
May masking tape go outdoors?
According to the product data, the three tesakrepp types are designated for indoor use and specified up to 60 °C. Sun and rain shorten the dwell time greatly; after that the paper can only be peeled off in shreds and the adhesive stays behind. For work outdoors, the surface protection film 4848 is the right choice – it is specified as UV-resistant.
How long may the protective film stay in place?
According to the product data, up to four weeks without residue. After that the adhesive begins to flow into the surface, and residue remains when peeling – heat and direct sun accelerate this considerably. Anyone who has to protect over a longer construction phase is better off changing the film in good time than leaving it. On fresh paint, masking is only done once it has dried through completely.
