About Soraton

Soraton is a Swiss manufacturer of application guns based in Hinterforst in the canton of St. Gallen. The range comprises manual, battery-powered and pneumatic devices as well as foam guns and accessories. We stock both cordless application guns of the PowerMax series HPS – devices for tough sealants and adhesives that take cartridges as well as foil bags.

Cartridge or foil bag – the device decides

A cartridge is a rigid tube with a piston; it is squeezed out and then thrown away. A foil bag contains more material for the same outer dimensions because the packaging is thinner, and after squeezing out leaves only a compressed film. It can only be processed, however, in a device with a suitable tube.

One device for both. According to the product data, the PowerMax devices take cartridges as well as foil bags – that saves a second device if both pack forms occur in the business. Anyone processing a lot of material saves packaging and trips to the container with the bag; anyone who only occasionally runs a metre of joint is quicker with the cartridge, because it is inserted without changing the tube.

Squeezing force is not an end in itself

Tough materials – highly filled hybrid adhesives, cold PU sealants, 2K systems – need more pressure than a sanitary silicone at room temperature. If the force is not enough, the device stalls or the bead becomes thin. If it is available in abundance, the speed can be used to dose precisely how much material comes out per centimetre.

Cold is the real adversary. A sealant that flows easily at twenty degrees becomes tough at five degrees – and then the squeezing force decides whether an even bead is produced at all. Both devices, HPS 4T and HPS 6T, are designed for high squeezing force according to the product data and have electronic speed control for even beads; according to the manufacturer, the battery is full again in half an hour. Practical tip: store cartridges in the warm before processing – that saves more force than any device.

With us the devices run under the designation of the sealant manufacturer for which they are supplied – here under the name of OTTO Chemie. The device type HPS and the name PowerMax stay the same; when reordering accessories the type is the reliable information.
Electronic speed control. It determines how fast the piston advances and thus the quantity of material per centimetre. With tough material it is run slowly, otherwise the bead breaks off.
Clean on the same day. Cured material on the piston and tube can later only be removed by force. According to the product data, cleaners for guns and foam are intended for this.

Frequently asked questions about Soraton

Why is the device called something different with you than at the manufacturer?

Application guns are often made by a device manufacturer and sold by sealant manufacturers under their own names. The type designation – here HPS 4T and HPS 6T, PowerMax series – is retained and is the information that matters for accessories and spare parts.

What does the foil bag offer over the cartridge?

More content for the same outer dimensions and considerably less packaging waste – instead of a rigid tube only a flat film remains. In return it needs a device with a suitable tube and a nozzle that is placed on the bag. For small quantities the cartridge is inserted more quickly.

What to do if the material does not flow in the cold?

Warm the container, do not load the device harder. Sealants and adhesives become considerably tougher at low temperature; most technical data sheets give a minimum processing temperature. A cartridge stored overnight in the warm solves the problem more reliably than any extra force – and at the same time spares piston and tube.

How do I get an even bead?

Three things: cut the nozzle at the right angle and to the joint width, set the speed to suit the material and guide the hand at a constant speed. The electronic control keeps the feed constant – the guiding speed remains a matter for the hand. This is best practised on an offcut, not on the visible joint.
