About Panasonic

Besides consumer electronics, Panasonic also builds cordless tools for professional use. From this range we stock both cordless cartridge guns of the EY series with 14.4 volts: devices that take cartridges and foil bags of up to 600 millilitres and come into their own where many metres of joint are run in a day.

Why the bead becomes more even with the cordless device

A hand lever gun works in strokes. Each stroke pushes the piston a little further, and between them the pressure drops – and that is exactly what can be seen in the joint: the bead becomes thicker and thinner in time with the hand. A cordless device instead pushes the piston continuously at an electronically controlled speed. The quantity per centimetre stays the same as long as the hand guides evenly.

Even means economical. An uneven bead is as a rule drawn too thick so that even the thin spots still hold – and thereby uses more material than the joint needs. According to the product data, both devices have electronic speed control and automatic pressure relief; the latter pulls the piston back after release, so that the cartridge does not run on and the end of the joint stays clean.

Brushless motor and two batteries: what that changes in everyday use

A brushless motor has no carbon brushes that wear out and eventually have to be replaced. It manages with less friction loss, therefore runs less warm and gets more work out of the same battery charge. On the building site this does not show as peak output but as endurance: the device lasts through the entire operation instead of fading in the last joint.

The second battery charges while the first one works. Two batteries are not a luxury but a matter of arithmetic. According to the product data, the battery of the EY 3641 lasts around fifty minutes under load and is full again in about an hour. With a single battery this results in a full hour's pause after each scant hour. With two batteries it shrinks to the ten minutes by which charging takes longer than working — and it only arises at every second change. It does not disappear completely: as long as charging takes longer than working, the second battery does not make up the lead. At 2.65 kilograms the EY 3640 is, according to the manufacturer, comparatively light – with overhead work and long joint runs that counts for more than any additional function.

Automatic pressure relief. After the switch is released the device takes the pressure off the piston. Without this function the cartridge runs on and leaves a bulge at the end of the joint.
Cartridge and bag in one device. According to the product data, both models take containers of up to 600 millilitres – including foil bags, which generate less packaging waste.
Speed before force. The electronic control determines how fast the piston advances. With tough material it is run slowly, with thin material faster – the bead stays equally thick in both cases.
Batteries in winter. Lithium-ion batteries lose considerable capacity in the cold. They belong in the warm overnight, not in the van.

Is a cordless device worthwhile compared with the hand gun?

As soon as more than a few metres of joint are regularly run in one go. The hand gun is cheaper and always ready for use, but tires the hand and delivers an uneven bead pattern. The cordless device draws evenly and without physical effort – the difference is clearest with tough materials and overhead work.

How do I clean the device after use?

The piston and tube are cleaned of material residues on the same day – cured sealant or adhesive can later only be removed by force and damages the guide in the process. For silicone and PU there are suitable cleaners for this; the battery is removed beforehand. Electronics and motor stay dry.

Why does the cartridge keep running after release?

Because the pressure in the container is not relieved. According to the product data, both Panasonic devices have automatic pressure relief that prevents exactly this. With hand guns without return, the only help is to release the slide by hand after each stroke – otherwise a portion too much always oozes out at the end of the joint.
