About KIM TEC

KIM TEC is the spray-can brand of KIM Jarolim Import and Export GmbH from Giebelstadt-Sulzdorf near Würzburg, a manufacturer of construction-chemical products. We stock the technical part of the range: adhesive lubricant spray for moving components, underbody protection from the can, and stainless steel, wheel rim and two-wheeler cleaners. These are the cans that stand on the workshop shelf and are used where something squeaks, rusts or can no longer be cleaned properly.

Why thin oil is of no use on moving parts

A penetrating oil gets everywhere – and stays nowhere. On a hinge, a chain or a cable that works under load and is subjected to shocks, thin oil is forced out of the lubrication point and flung off. An adhesive lubricant, by contrast, is formulated tacky: it stays where it was applied and withstands the pressure there too.

Tacky is the desired property here. According to the product data, KIM TEC adhesive lubricant spray stays on the component even under impact and vibration, can withstand −30 °C to +200 °C and at the same time protects the lubricated point from rust. That it applies transparently is more than cosmetics: nameplates, markings and scales remain legible. For the opposite case – loosening seized connections – a thin penetrating oil is needed; that is a different task and a different product.

Before lubricating, it is always the same: clean. Old, resinified grease and embedded dust form a paste that abrades instead of lubricating – new lubricant on top does not make it better but traps the grit. Remove first, then let it dry, then apply sparingly and in a targeted way. And sparingly means literally: excess lubricant binds dust and soon becomes a problem itself, especially on chains and open cables outdoors.

Underbody protection: the layer has to stay elastic

An underbody does not suffer even wear but individual impacts – loose chippings, gravel, grit. A hard, brittle layer develops fine cracks from this, and in every crack water stands on the sheet metal. An elastic layer deforms on impact and springs back; it stays closed. That is exactly why underbody protection is not a paint.

Bitumen-free and still elastic. According to the product data, KIM TEC underbody protection works on a rubber-resin basis instead of bitumen and can be painted over after drying – a difference that counts when the surface is subsequently to be painted in the car's colour. The substrate remains important: on loose rust or damp sheet metal, any coating merely seals the moisture in. Derust, dry, prime – and only then coat.

Acid-free is an argument for a rim cleaner. Acidic cleaners dissolve brake dust faster but attack sensitive coatings and attachments. According to the product data, the KIM TEC wheel rim cleaner is solvent-free and acid-free as well as biodegradable.
Active foam works over time. A clinging foam stays put on the vertical surface and softens the dirt instead of running off immediately – on sensitive parts this replaces the pressure washer.

Frequently asked questions about KIM TEC

Adhesive lubricant spray or penetrating oil?

These are two different tasks. A penetrating oil is thin and made to penetrate seized connections and loosen them. An adhesive lubricant spray is formulated tacky and made to stay at a lubrication point that works under load and vibration. Anyone who lubricates a chain with penetrating oil soon has a dry chain and an oil-spattered frame.

Can I paint over underbody protection?

According to the product data, KIM TEC underbody protection can be painted over after drying and works bitumen-free on a rubber-resin basis – bituminous coatings generally cannot. The waiting time before painting over is printed on the can. The preparatory work is important: loose rust must come off and the sheet metal must be dry, otherwise the coating seals the moisture in.

Why does stainless steel tarnish?

Because grease, fingerprints and foreign metal particles deposit on the surface – the latter can even lead to flash rust on a surface that does not rust itself. A stainless steel cleaner removes these deposits and, according to the product data, leaves a care film against new tarnishing. Wipe in the direction of the grain, otherwise visible streaks remain.

Is the rim cleaner suitable for all rims?

According to the product data, it is specified for alloy and steel rims and is gentle on seals and attachments because it works without solvents and without acid. For polished, uncoated or specially finished rims the usual approach still applies: a test on a hidden spot and a look at the rim manufacturer's specifications. The contact time on the can must be observed – letting it dry on is not intended with any cleaner.
