Sika Backer Rod Fire fire protection backer rod mineral wool A1 60 mm × 25 m

Description

Sika Backer Rod Fire is a fire-resistant joint backer rod made of mineral wool encased in a glass fibre mesh, for fire-rated joint sealing in horizontal and vertical building elements. The rod is classified as non-combustible A1 to EN 13501-1 and, in the tested system with Sika sealant, achieves a fire resistance of up to 240 minutes to EN 1366-4. Available as a roll in seven diameters from 12 to 60 mm for professional applicators.

Benefits at a glance

  • Non-combustible: mineral wool with a density of approx. 250 kg/m³, reaction to fire A1 to EN 13501-1.
  • Tested fire resistance: up to 240 minutes to EN 1366-4, CE marking based on ETA 23/0088.
  • Quick installation: inserted in a single layer, flexible and compressible.
  • Tolerates uneven flanks: the rod compensates for irregularities in the joint.
  • Movement capability: permissible total deformation 7.5 % in combination with the Sika sealant.

Areas of application

  • Fire-rated joints in vertical building elements such as walls
  • Fire-rated joints in horizontal building elements such as ceilings and floors
  • Backing under Sika sealants in linear joint and gap seals

Limits & notes

The fire resistance does not apply to the rod alone, but only to the complete joint build-up of backer rod and sealant. Which class a joint achieves depends on the joint width, joint depth and the sealant used; ETA 23/0088 and the classification report to EN 13501-2 are decisive. For normal expansion joints without fire protection requirements a PE backer rod is sufficient. According to the manufacturer, the product is intended only for commercial or professional applicators.

Application & tips

The joint flanks must be sound, clean and dry, free of oil, grease, dust, paints and water repellents; the pre-treatment follows the Sika primer chart for the chosen sealant. Choose a diameter around 15 % larger than the joint width. Unroll the roll gently: the green-marked end lies on the outside, the red-marked end on the inside must not be pulled out. To cut to length, wrap the rod with adhesive tape at least 40 mm wide and cut through the middle of the tape. Insert evenly to joint depth with a blunt tool, firmly seated, without twisting, bulging or gaps, and do not overstretch lengthwise. Then close the joint with the matching Sika sealant.

Frequently asked questions

Which diameter do I need?
According to the data sheet: 12 mm for 7–10.2 mm joint width, 15 mm for 9–12.7 mm, 20 mm for 12–17 mm, 30 mm for 16–25.5 mm, 40 mm for 24–34 mm, 50 mm for 32–42.5 mm and 60 mm for 40–51 mm.

Is the joint fire-resistant with the rod alone?
No. The fire resistance of up to 240 minutes applies only in the tested system of backer rod and Sika sealant to ETA 23/0088.

How do I cut the rod cleanly?
Wrap it with adhesive tape at least 40 mm wide and cut through the middle of the tape so that the mineral wool does not escape from the glass fibre mesh.

Does the rod need a safety data sheet?
No. Under REACH it counts as an article; according to the manufacturer, a safety data sheet is not required.
