Description
OTTO Primer 1215 is a thin-bodied mineral primer based on a solvent-based adhesion promoter combination for mineral, absorbent substrates such as concrete, plaster and fibre cement. It was developed by OTTO for its own sealants and adhesives and improves their adhesion on porous joint flanks. The 250 ml aluminium bottle is intended for several joints or one building project.
Benefits at a glance
- Reliable adhesion on porous surfaces: improves the adhesion of OTTO sealants and adhesives on concrete, plaster and fibre cement.
- Short waiting time: after a flash-off time of at least 15 minutes (23 °C, 50 % RH) the sealant can be applied.
- Flexible time window: up to 3 hours after priming, and several hours in a dust-free environment.
- High yield: consumption approx. 100 to 300 g/m², depending on the absorbency of the substrate.
- System-tested: Compatibility with OTTO sealants and adhesives tested and approved by OTTO application technology.
Areas of application
- Joint flanks made of concrete
- Joint flanks on plaster
- Fibre cement boards and components
- Other mineral, absorbent materials in the joint area
Limits & notes
The primer is intended for absorbent, mineral substrates. For metal and smooth, non-absorbent surfaces and for plastics there are separate OTTO primers. For sealants and adhesives other than OTTO, and for other substrates or coatings, OTTO recommends preliminary tests. Do not apply the primer beyond the joint edges, otherwise soiling or visual changes are possible.
Hazard statements: Danger. H225 Highly flammable liquid and vapour. H319 Causes serious eye irritation. H336 May cause drowsiness or dizziness. H304 May be fatal if swallowed and enters airways. EUH066 Repeated exposure may cause skin dryness or cracking. Safety data sheet available from the manufacturer.
Application & tips
Free the bonding surfaces of release agents, grease, oil, dust, water and old adhesives or sealants; clean porous substrates of loose particles mechanically, for example with a steel brush or grinding disc. Apply the primer thinly to the joint flanks with a suitable brush and allow to flash off for at least 15 minutes; higher temperatures shorten and lower temperatures lengthen the flash-off time. Only then apply the sealant. Solvent-containing, flammable: only with good ventilation, away from ignition sources; wear safety goggles and solvent-resistant gloves, according to the safety data sheet made of butyl rubber with a thickness of more than 0.4 mm. Because of the many influences on site, a trial application is always necessary. The use-by date is on the container, storage stability is 12 months at 23 °C.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the primer have to flash off?
At least 15 minutes at 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity. The sealant should follow after 3 hours at the latest; in a dust-free environment several hours are also possible.
How much primer do I need?
OTTO states approx. 100 to 300 g/m². Highly absorbent substrates such as plaster tend to be at the upper end.
Is the primer also suitable for metal or plastic?
No, it is intended for mineral, absorbent substrates. For metal and smooth surfaces and for plastics OTTO offers its own primers.
