Areas of application:

  • For use indoors and outdoors
  • For stress-compensating bonding and assembly of a wide variety of materials such as wood, wood-based materials, glass, metals (e.g. aluminium, stainless steel, anodised aluminium, brass, copper), plastics (e.g. rigid PVC, flexible PVC, GRP etc.), mineral substrates (e.g. brick, tile, ceramics), fire-protection building boards (plasterboard etc.)

  • Stress-compensating bonding of mirrors to ceramics, glass, plastic, stainless steel, aluminium, wood, concrete etc.
  • Bonding stone, natural stone and ceramics
  • Bonding window sills, skirting boards, decorative strips and stair treads

Special notes:

Initial tack can vary considerably depending on the materials to be bonded and the way the adhesive is applied. Experience shows that applying over the full surface with a notched trowel (1.5 mm teeth) in horizontal lines is advantageous. The adhesive should be moistened with water from a commercially available spray bottle. When joining the substrates, the bonding surface should be wetted completely and evenly with adhesive by pressing on accordingly. We strongly recommend preliminary tests for every application! Before using the adhesive  / sealant  the user must ensure that the building materials in the contact area (solid, liquid and gaseous) are compatible with the adhesive / sealant  and do not damage or alter it (e.g. discolour it). For building materials that are subsequently processed in the area of the adhesive  / sealant  the user must clarify beforehand that their ingredients or emissions cannot impair or alter the adhesive , sealant  (e.g. discolouration). If necessary, the user must consult the respective manufacturer of the building materials. For bonding or sealing of glass under simultaneously heavy UV and water exposure, e.g. in glass facades, roof glazing etc., we recommend using silicone sealants such as Ottoseal S110 / Ottoseal S120 (for glazing rebate sealing), Ottoseal S10 (among others for bonding), Ottoseal S7 (for weather sealing) or Ottocoll S 81 (for bonded windows). For UV-exposed bonding/sealing of transparent plastics such as acrylic glass we recommend our silicone sealant Ottoseal S72. Not suitable for sealing/bonding copper under UV/temperature exposure.

Pre-treatment:

Preparing the bonding surfaces. Compatibility: paints, varnishes, plastics and other coating materials must be compatible with the adhesive / sealant.

Cleaning: The bonding surfaces must be cleaned and any contamination, such as release agents, preservatives, grease, oil, dust, water, old adhesives / sealants and other substances that impair adhesion, must be removed.

Substrates: cleaner for non-porous ones. Cleaning should be carried out with OTTO Cleaner T, or other cleaners based on acetone or isopropanol, and with a clean, lint-free cloth. Cleaner for porous substrates: porous surfaces must be cleaned of loose particles mechanically, e.g. with a steel brush or a grinding disc.

Application note:

To achieve optimum adhesion and good mechanical properties, the inclusion of air must be avoided. The time to curing can be shortened by adding moisture and by higher temperatures. When bonding vapour-tight substrates over a large area, the adhesive should be dampened. Because of the many possible influences during processing and application, the applicator must always carry out a trial application.

Application as mirror adhesive:
Only mirrors whose reflective and protective layer comply with DIN 1238 5.1 and DIN EN 1036 may be bonded. In case of doubt, please be sure to obtain information from the mirror manufacturer
. Mineral substrates such as concrete, plaster, masonry, plasterboard, aerated concrete and untreated wood must be primed with OTTO Primer 1105 without fail. The use of this primer serves not only to improve adhesion but also for the absolutely necessary blocking of the alkalinity. Alkalinity that has not been blocked can, in combination with moisture, possibly damage the back of the mirror. When bonding, never apply the mirror adhesive in dots or over the full surface, but in vertical strips. The length of one adhesive strip should not exceed 200 mm. Per m² of mirror surface, at least 3 adhesive strips are to be applied so that, after the mirror has been pressed on, the strip width does not exceed 10 mm and the distance between the adhesive strips is at least 200 mm, so that the air circulation required for curing is possible. For optimum load-bearing capacity a bonding area of at least 10 cm²/kg of mirror weight is required.

How to bond mirrors correctly

To avoid trapping the crosslinker cleavage product, a minimum distance of 1.6 mm between mirror and substrate must be maintained. This can be achieved most conveniently by sticking on spacers. The minimum distance prescribed here serves to carry off the crosslinker cleavage product. It does not in any way override the minimum rear-ventilation distances for mirrors required by the Institute of the Glazing Trade in Hadamar. The strength values required for bonding are reached after 48 hours at the earliest (23 °C, approx. 50 % RH). Until then, pre-fixing is necessary. This can be done with removable mechanical aids, such as blocks, wedges or one-sided adhesive tapes from the front (mirror side) or with double-sided adhesive tapes from behind (back). For external face sealing in combination with natural stone we recommend OTTOSEAL S 70, in combination with other materials such as ceramics, metal, glass etc. we recommend OTTOSEAL S 120 and OTTOSEAL S 121. Note that sealing may only take place after the mirror adhesive has cured completely and the cleavage products have escaped. This takes about 7 days. For mirrors without a glass back, only the vertical mirror edges should be sealed in order to avoid damage to the mirror coating through the formation of condensation. Please note the following drawing. When installing mirrors on ceilings and when installing mirrors on walls whose upper edge is more than 4 m above floor level, the mirrors must additionally be secured mechanically, e.g. with screws or by setting them in frames.

Storage:

The specific use-by date can be found printed on the container and must be observed. We recommend storing our products in the unopened original containers dry (< 60 % RH) in a temperature range of + 15° C to + 25° C. If the products are stored and/or transported for longer periods (several weeks) at higher temperature/humidity, a reduction in shelf life or a change in material properties cannot be ruled out. With prolonged storage at higher temperatures (≥ 30°C), initial tack may be reduced.

All reviews come from buyers. Reviews can only be submitted via the personal, signed link we send to the order's e-mail address after delivery; the link is bound to the order and the purchased item, there is no form without a purchase. We check every review before publication and publish positive and negative reviews alike. Reviews from our former shop baustoffhandel-nrw.de were migrated; there, too, only customers who had bought the item could review it.

For your project

These products go with it

Project: Bond strips, boards and panels

Bond strips, panels and wall boards onto a clean, load-bearing and dust-free substrate; absorbent surfaces such as plaster or concrete need a primer depending on the adhesive. Apply the adhesive in strips or, for large boards, over the full surface with the notched trowel and fix the parts until the adhesive has grabbed.
