Sealing Windows & Doors

Windows and doors are sealed on the principle of "tighter inside than outside": airtight on the inside, rain-tight and vapour-permeable on the outside. Impregnated foam tape, window silicone and connection membranes prevent draughts, heat loss and moisture damage in the connection joint.

How to do it

  1. Check the joint width and size the impregnated foam tape accordingly.
  2. Outside: use impregnated foam tape or a rain-tight sealing tape.
  3. Inside: form an airtight closure with membrane or a permanently elastic sealant.
  4. Strike off the visible joints cleanly with window silicone (for example OTTOSEAL S120).

Frequently asked

Is construction foam enough to seal a window joint?

No - PU foam insulates but does not seal. Airtightness and rain-tightness come only from sealing tapes, membranes or sealant.

Which impregnated foam tape is the right one?

The joint width decides: in its compressed state the tape must meet the duty group required (for example BG1) - details in our RAL installation section.
