Bonding & Protecting Wood

Wood asks for two things: the right bond and the right protection. For load-bearing and water-resistant joints, PU glues and construction adhesives are the first choice; for exterior surfaces it is stains, oils and weather-protection paints.

How to do it

  1. Bonding: check the moisture content (8 to 12 per cent) and prepare the faces flat, parallel and free of dust.
  2. Choose the glue by duty class (D2 indoors through to D4/PU water-resistant) and join under clamping pressure.
  3. Protecting: prime bare wood (wood primer), then apply stain, oil or opaque paint in two coats.

Frequently asked

Which wood glue is water-resistant?

Class D3 glues are moisture-resistant, D4 and PU glues water-resistant - for outdoor work always choose D4 or PUR.

Stain or opaque paint outdoors?

A stain brings out the grain and is easy to refresh; opaque paint (for example GORI 99) protects longest and covers coloured substrates.
