Preparing the substrate:
The substrate must be firm, sound, absorbent and largely level. Contamination by oil, grease or other release agents must be removed. Gravel pockets and voids as well as unevenness larger than permitted under DIN 18202 must be levelled out with a suitable concrete. Dampen the substrate well before applying the waterproofing slurry. The surface should be matt damp. The residual moisture must not exceed the following values:
Cement screed: 2.0 %
Anhydrite screed: 0.5 %
Anhydrite screed, heated: 0.3 %
Application of waterproofing slurry:
To avoid lumps forming when mixing, it is advisable to put in about 2/3 of the amount of water needed for the desired consistency first and mix with a suitable paddle mixer and a drill at approx. 600 rpm. After the material has broken down, add the remaining amount of water. After a mixing time of approx. 3 min., leave to mature briefly and mix again. Process the mixed material within one hour. Material that has already stiffened must not be made workable again with water. Apply the waterproofing slurry generously and evenly with a stiff brush, smoothing trowel or suitable spraying equipment in 2 to 3 passes. The application thickness must not exceed 5 mm. When laying tiles and slabs using the thick-bed method, the following procedure must be observed: after the waterproofing slurry has been applied, a splatter coat is applied to the second layer, into the fresh material. After the splatter coat has hardened, tiles can then be laid using the thick-bed method.
Follow-up work after applying waterproofing slurry:
The fresh waterproofing must be protected for at least 3 days from direct sunlight, too rapid loss of water, extreme heat, draughts, frost and rain. After approx. 24 h, ceramic coverings can be laid with commercially available, solvent-free tile adhesives using the thin-bed method. For work outdoors, the ceramic covering must be laid without voids. The waterproofing slurry must be completely dry before protective layers are applied or before the soil is backfilled (1-3 days, depending on temperature and humidity). With the backfill material, make sure that no water-binding soil comes into contact with the waterproofed surface. With this type of soil, place a strip about 50 cm wide in front of the waterproofing in layers with water-permeable fill material. The coating must have set sufficiently before backfilling (7 days) and be adequately protected (gypsum-free trowel plaster, protective boards or similar). Point or line loads must be avoided at all costs. Clean tools and soiled areas with water immediately after use. Because of the many possible influences during processing and application, the applicator must always carry out a trial application. The specific use-by date can be found printed on the container and must be observed.
