Facades & Expansion Joints

Facades move - expansion joints take up that movement: between components, at parapets and across large rendered areas, elastic joints absorb it. Add a water repellent and the facade stays water-shedding, clean and frost-proof.

How to do it

  1. Check the joint dimensions: width to depth at 2:1, and prevent three-sided adhesion with a backer rod.
  2. Prime the flanks (primer to suit the substrate).
  3. Apply the facade sealant and smooth it - overpaintable systems in acrylic, exposed joints in silicone or hybrid.
  4. Protect absorbent facade surfaces with a siloxane water repellent.

Frequently asked

Why does the facade joint keep cracking?

Usually because of three-sided adhesion or the wrong joint geometry - the backer rod is essential so that the sealant adheres to two flanks only.

What does a water repellent achieve?

It makes mineral surfaces water-shedding without blocking diffusion - fewer algae, less frost damage and a facade that stays clean longer.
