Description
Düfa Anti-Rust Primer in Oxide Red (RAL 3009) is an anti-rust primer based on alkyd resin for primer and intermediate coats on steel and iron components indoors and outdoors. Rust-inhibiting pigments slow corrosion, while the coat at the same time provides adhesion for the later topcoat. At about 100 ml/m², the 0.75 litre can covers around 7.5 m² per coat and is tailored to painters, metalworkers and DIY enthusiasts.
Benefits at a glance
- Corrosion protection from the primer: rust-inhibiting pigments on bare steel, at least two coats according to the data sheet.
- Quick build-up: surface-dry after about 4 to 6 hours, can be overpainted after around 12 hours.
- Good coverage: about 100 ml/m² per coat, i.e. around 10 m² from one litre.
- Ready for use without thinning: supplied ready to apply, application with brush or roller.
- Matt base for the top coat: the matt film takes synthetic resin paints evenly.
Areas of application
- Steel pipes and pipelines indoors and outdoors
- Steel doors, steel frames and gates
- Balcony railings, handrails and fences
- Hot water radiators
- Primer and intermediate coat before synthetic resin top coats
Limits & notes
The primer is a pre-coat, not a finished final coat: without a top coat the matt film remains unprotected against weathering and abrasion. On galvanised steel, aluminium and plastic, an adhesion primer for non-rusting substrates belongs underneath instead. Rust, mill scale and scale must be removed mechanically down to bare metallic steel before application, otherwise corrosion continues to work beneath the coating.
Hazard statements: H412 Harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects. EUH066 Repeated exposure may cause skin dryness or cracking. Safety data sheet available from the manufacturer.
Application & tips
Remove rust from the substrate mechanically, round off sharp edges, degrease surfaces and let them dry. Stir the material well and apply undiluted with brush or roller; at least two coats are necessary for sufficient protective effect. Object and ambient temperature must be at least plus 5 degrees Celsius. The product contains solvent: apply only with good ventilation and away from ignition sources, wear safety goggles and solvent-resistant nitrile gloves. After about 4 to 6 hours the surface is surface-dry, after around 12 hours it can be overpainted. Clean tools immediately after use with nitro universal thinner or brush cleaner. Store containers dry, cool and frost-free, close opened containers tightly.
Frequently asked questions
How much area can I cover with 0.75 litres?
At about 100 ml/m² the can is enough for around 7.5 m² per coat. As at least two coats are needed, that is about 3.7 m² of fully protected area.
Can I paint directly onto rust?
No. Rust, mill scale and scale must be removed mechanically until bare steel is visible, otherwise corrosion undermines the coating.
Which paint suits it on top?
Solvent-based synthetic resin paints, applied after a drying time of around 12 hours at the earliest.
Is the rust protection primer suitable for galvanised components?
No, for zinc, aluminium and plastic an adhesion primer for non-rusting substrates is needed.
Do I have to thin it before application?
No, the material is supplied ready to apply and is applied undiluted.
