Description
Ottoseal S28 Aquarium Silicone for bonding aquariums and sealing aquariums. Ottoseal S28 Aquarium Silicone offers the highest possible safety for all living creatures in the aquarium.
- Very easy to work with
- Acetate-curing 1K silicone sealant
- Very good weather, ageing and UV resistance
- Offers the highest possible safety for sensitive living creatures
- High bond strength
Areas of application of Ottoseal S28 for sealing aquariums:
- Elastic bonding of all-glass aquariums, terrariums, display cabinets and glass structures
- Bonding and sealing glass blocks
- Production of frameless all-glass aquariums and terrariums in accordance with DIN 32622
Substrates:
The bonding surfaces must be cleaned and any contamination, such as release agents, preservatives, grease, oil, dust, water, old adhesives/sealants and other substances that impair adhesion, must be removed. Cleaning non-porous substrates: clean with OTTO Cleaner T (flash-off time approx. 1 minute) and a clean, lint-free cloth. Cleaning porous substrates: clean surfaces of loose particles mechanically, e.g. with a steel brush or a grinding disc. The bonding surfaces must be clean, free of grease, dry and sound.
Application notes:
The required glass thicknesses of the base plate and side panes depend on the dimensions of the aquarium (see DIN 32622).
1. Aquariums with a sealant/adhesive layer thickness of up to 12 mm:
- Clean the bonding surfaces with OTTO Cleaner T using a clean cloth or rag
- The minimum width of the bonded joint at the base plate is 2 mm and the maximum 5 mm (note: for side panes the bonded joint can also be dimensioned larger)
- Vibrations, e.g. from transport and handling, as well as loads on the bonded joint of the freshly bonded aquarium, are to be avoided. Otherwise there is a risk of the sealant/adhesive detaching from the glass and / or of cracks in the silicone.
- Transport may only take place after Ottoseal S28 Aquarium and Terrarium Silicone has cured completely.
- In principle, detachment of the sealant/adhesive from the glass (“shrinkage bubbles”) can be avoided by coating the bonding surface beforehand and filling the bonded joint step by step with aquarium adhesive as described under point 2.
- Depending on the layer thickness and the ambient conditions, vulcanisation can take several days. In thick layers, an increasing reduction in the through-curing speed per day must be taken into account.
- Depending on the joint dimensions and the ambient conditions, the curing time can be up to 2 weeks.
- Before the tank is filled with water for the first time, the aquarium silicone must have cured completely.
- Before the first filling, the tank must be rinsed with clear water to remove the last residues of the vulcanisation by-product (acetic acid).
2. Aquariums with a sealant / adhesive layer thickness of more than 12 mm:
- Clean the bonding surfaces with OTTO Cleaner T using a clean cloth or rag
- Coating the bonding surfaces: apply a silicone film approx. 1 - 2 mm thick with a spatula to the surface of the side pane and base plate intended for bonding.
- After the coating has cured (approx. 24 hrs.), fill the bonded joint up to a silicone thickness of 10 mm at most
- Curing time at least 5 days - then fill the remaining bonded joint and again observe a curing time of at least 7 days.
- Vibrations, e.g. from transport and handling, as well as loads on the bonded joint of the freshly bonded aquarium, are to be avoided. Otherwise there is a risk of the aquarium adhesive detaching from the glass and/or of cracks in the silicone. Transport may only take place after the aquarium silicone has cured completely.
- Depending on the layer thickness and the ambient conditions, vulcanisation can take several days. In thick layers, an increasing reduction in the through-curing speed per day must be taken into account.
- Before the tank is filled with water for the first time, the aquarium sealant must have cured completely.
- Before the first filling, the tank must be rinsed with clear water to remove the last residues of the vulcanisation by-product (acetic acid). - Alternatively the 2K adhesive Novasil S 47 can be used. With this, the step-by-step filling of the bonded joint is not necessary.

Standards and approvals:
